Co-ordinating UK cleaning
February 21st 2007

The BCC was established in 1982 to coordinate the affairs of the industry and to be responsible for industry matters. It comprises 19 members which cover a wide range from carpet cleaning to training and contract cleaning to environmental campaigning.

The Council provides a forum for members to meet and work together to raise the profile of the industry. It also promotes and encourages improvements in health, hygiene and general cleanliness standards.

We plough funding directly back into the industry to sponsor training, improvement of standards and promotional needs of member bodies. Membership is open to any recognised trade association, research, educational body or institution concerned with industrial commercial and institutional cleaning.

Among our aims is the desire to increase public awareness of the industry’s contribution to both the environment and economy. We have become a contact for the press on cleaning matters and are continuing to forge links into the Government as the industry Voice.

One of our main projects is as organisers of the Clean Britain Awards – a competition to discover the Cleanest Place in Britain. This has evolved from Britain’s Cleanest City competition to now include an awards scheme for towns and districts as well. The finale of the Clean Britain awards 2007 is taking place on Tuesday 13th March at the Cleaning Show.

BCC prides itself as a keen supporter of conferences and award ceremonies which give recognition to cleaning and the cleaning staff who toil behind the scenes in all services to keep conditions clean and tidy.We sponsor key award ceremonies such as the Golden Service Awards,Loo of the Year Awards and the Building Cleanability Awards.

We have recognised the value in liaising with other sectors to work on industry improvements. For example, we have forums with: the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) on cleaning safety; trade unions such as the Trade Unions Congress (TUC) on working conditions; the Association of British Insurers (ABI) on appropriate insurance for cleaners, such as those in window cleaning.

The Council fully supports its members’ - Asset Skills, BICSc and CSSA – work on establishing the Pathway Card. This is an online record of achievement for cleaners to show to employers their training and qualification.

We hope that the Cleaning Show 2007 will prove the most successful yet – a place where much business will be done and pleasure will be had with colleagues old and new.
