Improving the skills base
February 21st 2007

BICSc was founded in 1961 as the independent professional body of the UK cleaning industry. Our mission is to raise both professional status and standards within the industry through training and education. We view cleaning very much as a career with opportunities for promotion. Working in the cleaning industry is something to be proud of. There is no such thing as ‘just a cleaner’. Cleaning is a skilled, professional business.

Our major contribution to the cleaning industry is the internationally recognised Cleaning Operatives Proficiency Certificate (COPC). This popular workplacebased qualification is widely used with 100,000 cleaning staff certified in the UK alone.

The Supervisory Skills Certificate (CSSC) provides a necessary qualification for supervisors by highlighting the professional approach of the organisation. It illustrates this by setting a standard for the level of skills achievement that should be expected of supervisors. In addition to the COPC and CSSC, BICSc offers assessment schemes in sanitary cleaning, food premises cleaning and car valeting. In keeping with industry demands, we are scheduled to launch our new Healthcare Cleaning Certificate in April 2007.

Training for BICSc courses is available through a network of BICSc approved assessors and training centres in over 15 countries, making our reach truly global. In addition to our own qualifications, the Institute works in partnership with City & Guilds and SQA,awarding bodies for other qualifications including N/SVQs. But the Institute is much more than an awarding body. With over 4000 individual and 600 corporate members, BICSc members represent a substantial cross section of the cleaning industry. Organisations that become corporate members demonstrate their commitment to the future of the cleaning industry by pledging to observe the Institute’s code of practice.
